The USAMP Magnesium Powertrain Cast Components Project is forecast to be a forty-eight month effort. The decision gate will occur in 2003. At that time key questions about the future prospects for a magnesium-intensive powertrain will have been answered and scientific and economic implementation barriers identified. Programs to overcome the scientific barriers will have been proposed by interested universities and laboratories and may have already commenced. A question that has been asked by MPCC participants during the course of the Project concerns the incentive for participation in Phase II of the Project by alloy suppliers whose alloys are not selected for Phase II. The answer to this question is that by participating in the Project, not only will the individual suppliers have the opportunity to 'compete' for selection in Phase II and benefit from having the extensive property testing that will take place, but each supplier will, in Phase II, be able to follow the development of dies and molds, the casting of the components, and have access to the test results. In doing so, the actual alloy property requirements and design and operating requirements will be revealed. This information will provide all participating alloy suppliers with the opportunity to assess and focus further development of their own individual alloys. The industrial participation in this project is indicated in Tables I, II, III and IV which contain lists of the team members. In each figure, the participants are sorted by the areas where their greatest contribution will be realized. Finally, if the Magnesium Powertrain Cast Components Project does realize its vision of a magnesiumintensive engine that is cost-effective and has demonstrable performance benefits, then it will be up to DaimlerChrysler, Ford, and General Motors to take the next major step: the production implementation of the magnesium-intensive engine. This will be a revolutionary change for both the automotive and magnesium communities.
