Idling noise of medium and heavy diesel engines has become an important noise assessment criterion in the commercial vehicle sector. Starting and low idle noise is often the first impression a potential customer gains of the vehicle. A quiet and pleasant low idle noise is critical in giving the desired impression. In urban environments, with heavy traffic and consequently large amounts of non-moving vehicles, high levels of idle noise are a disturbance to the general public. This paper deals with the systematic approach to the reduction of idle noise in light, medium and heavy-duty diesel engines. Actual examples are given of recent developments made in idle noise reduction on current production engines. It has been shown that significant reductions of diesel engine idle noise can be achieved when a systematic approach is used. Important aspects include the choice of fuel injection equipment, injection parameters and control of piston slap. Using just such an approach a reduction of idle noise from 84.2 dB(A) to 73.0 dB(A) for a midrange engine has been achieved. The choice of the fuel injection equipment is particularly important. Not only does the choice of system dictate how flexible the injection parameters can be but also the system itself can be a significant noise source. The use of pilot injection gives a noticeable improvement in noise quality as well as overall level. Although the data presented here is primarily for commercial vehicle diesel engines certain parallels can be drawn for passenger car applications. The common rail injection system is widely used in car applications and has certainly helped to make the diesel engine more appealing to the general public.
