Wheel Probes have traditionally been used for fast, relatively dry inspections for thickness. Use of a phased array probe within the wheel gives the possibility of multiple angle inspection with focussed beams. This paper details the modelling, design difficulties and experiments carried out for inspection of rail heads with a wheel probe, and shows how this can be implemented in general for inspection of billets of complex shape. A dry coupled phased array ultrasonic system for the detection of defects in rail was developed in the Rail Inspect project. Phased array transducers can be used to generate both 0 deg and angled beams in a rail section. Focal laws can be used to correct for wear on the head and to skew beams to maximise signals from defects. Software has been developed to identify significant signals from the large volume of ultrasonic data while ignoring lower amplitude noise. The technology is available for a wide range of wrought or drawn products should these require minimal coupling liquid.
