Within the framework of the research initiative INVENT (Intelligent Traffic and User-friendly Technology, the program is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research BMBF) the partners BMW Group Research and Technology, DaimlerChrysler AG, Volkswagen AG, and Robert Bosch GmbH are jointly engaged in the component project FVM focusing on driver behavior and human machine interaction. Main objective of this project is to derive methods being able to test and guarantee the user-friendliness of future driver information and driver assistance systems (DIS/DAS). As one specific topic the project addresses the impact DIS/DAS usage has on traffic safety. A procedure for the objective evaluation was developed within a sub-contract of the project at Fraunhofer Institute for Transportation and Infrastructure Systems IVI and the Institute for Traffic and Transportation Psychology of the Dresden University of Technology. This method concentrates on the emergence of driving errors (e.g. inadequate speed, insufficient headway, insecure lane keeping), on the contextual situation of the DIS/DAS usage and on the psychological backgrounds of the driver's behavior (e.g. mental and visual workload, situation awareness). In well-defined experiments in real traffic or in a driving simulator environment the assessment procedure can be applied by comparing the occurrence of driving errors when driving with or without the DIS/DAS. The paper describes the concepts underlying the procedure and gives examples for driving error categories and related thresholds as well as the definition of the experimental conditions.
