In the current automotive entertainment/ infotainment environment, subsystems are segmented by traditional technological familiarity and similarity. These subsystems include the radio space, the rear seat entertainment space, the infotainment space, and the satellite radio space. All of these subsystems are connected through the entertainment bus of the car. Simply speaking, the current architecture is cumbersome, unnecessary, expensive, and it is not scalable or easily reusable. The solution is integration by removing all of the redundancies and keeping only the technological necessities, while keeping hardware and software scalable. A possible solution is integration of most of these spaces into the radio head unit. Skeptics may say that this is physically impossible due to size, RF interference concerns and heat issues, but all of these concerns can be overcome. All of these spaces can be combined into the radio space by utilizing a highly scalable and cost effective hardware/software methodology. This concept is applicable from the mid-line system up to the very high-end system. By commonizing like hardware elements, understanding control/audio/video bus strategies, and adding the core elements for each new technology, the duplication of power supply, mechanical chassis, processors, and LAN hardware can be eliminated. Additionally, new technology integration can happen late in the development cycle with minimal impact to the current hardware. This notion is achieved through interfaces, such as USB, SD memory, Bluetooth, and 802.11
