Pedestrian protection systems will become an essential safety function in future vehicles as the government will force automotive manufacturers to improve pedestrian safety within the next few years. For such systems the ability to recognise pedestrians is mandatory. This includes detection, tracking and classification of these vulnerable road users. This paper presents a prototype system for the early detection of a car-to-pedestrian accident that has been tested in a passenger car. The paper starts with a detailed interpretation of the accident analysis of car-to-pedestrian accidents. The detection of endangered pedestrians is followed by the introduction of a new strategy for a reliable and robust pedestrian classification to be used in pedestrian protection systems. For environment sensing a high resolution multilayer laser scanner with a horizontal field of view of about 120 degrees in front of the vehicle is used, which covers more than 70% of all car-to-pedestrian accidents. Under consideration of a moving pedestrian (94%) 2/3 of all car-to-pedestrian accidents are addressed with the presented pedestrian protection approach. A region of no escape (RONE) is introduced. This RONE describes an area in front of the car where the car-to-pedestrian accident is unavoidable, if the pedestrian is detected inside this area. The described system offers the early detection of accident scenarios up to 300ms before the crash. This offers the introduction of reversible actuators, such as an active hood, in order to mitigate the consequences of a car-to-pedestrian accident.
