Traffic accident rates during night are much higher than during day because of multiple combined reasons. The limited range and field of view of headlamps, glaring due to incident headlamps, hardly visible cues and driver's view. Fog driving is seldom but dangerous. The degradation of perception modifies driver behaviours and increases danger (tendency to get close to preceding car). Aeronautics is quite safe, but two major accident causes are identified. Runway incursion (risk increasing with traffic) and CFIT (Controlled Flight Into Terrain). Runway incursion means that a plane is illegitimately entering on a runway or taxiway. CFIT occurs when a plane that is still under control crashes into terrain. This can happen when the crew have not a good perception of its position compared with surrounding terrain. In both cases reduced visibility is a major contributing factor. The paper presents the EU funded SEE project, aimed to raise human situation awareness in conditions of reduced visibility in the automotive and the aeronautical context through the development of a dual band camera system. In such a system cameras operating in spectral bands less obscured by reduced visibility condition than the visible band produce an image which is then presented to the driver or the pilot. In the first step of the SEE project a Long Wave Infrared (LWIR) camera has been implemented. The results obtained with the SEE camera system proved that a combination of Short Wave Infrared (SWIR) and LWIR images can enhance the vision significantly. The realised cameras performed according to the expectations. Actually in case of the LWIR camera the expectations were even exceeded as a result of the sophisticated correction strategy. The results of the evaluation in flight and car simulators will give numerical evidence of the overall benefit achievable with the SEE camera system
