The EU Commission has defined with the e-Safety program a demanding goal by diminishing the number of persons killed in traffic accidents to the half until the year 2010. Bosch wants to contribute significantly to this goal by developing Driver Assistance Systems in close cooperation with OEMs, thus reducing the frequency and the severity of road accidents. The paper presents the state of the art and the components of recently introduced Adaptive Cruise Control Systems (ACC) and the efforts made by Bosch to develop a preventive driver assistance system. Studies indicate that about 60 percent of front-end crashes and almost one third of head-on collisions would not occur if the driver could react one half second earlier. From 2005 on Bosch will extend ACC as the most important component of predictive safety systems to Predictive Safety Systems (PSS) in three stages. PSS1 addresses the cases with partial braking. It prepares the brake system for a possible emergency braking by building up brake pressure, bringing the brake pads into very light contact with the brake discs and modifying the hydraulic brake assist. PSS2 addresses the cases with no braking. The second generation of the Predictive Safety System does not only prepare the braking system; it also gives a timely warning to the driver about dangerous traffic situations. PSS3 performs an emergency braking in the case of an unavoidable accident The system will not only recognize an unavoidable collision, but will also trigger automatic emergency braking with maximum vehicle deceleration. This will especially reduce the severity of an accident when the driver has failed to react.
