It is only in recent times that India has begun to capitalize on its natural maritime advantage. This review investigates how the country's ports are keeping up with escalating demand - three years after trade restrictions have been lifted. The increase in trade, improvement in service, private sector partnerships, maximization of port competition, the effect on trade, investments in liquid bulk cargoes, and the credit for opening new inlets for flow of edible oils into the country are briefly discussed.
