The continuous evolution of the electrified transport systems and their resulting development into complex networks, implicates an increase of the performances required to the supply system in terms of operation economy, quality, safety and reliability. The relevant literature focuses the attention on the employment of advanced automation architecture and components characterized by high innovation technology in order to achieve the requirements established at the design stage. In this paper an optimum voltage control strategy of a modern electrified railway system is proposed to satisfy the above-mentioned requirements. Three control strategies have been examined and compared: the first one minimizes the difference of the voltage to the trolley of the trains from the nominal value; the second one refers to the minimization of power losses; the last one is focused on the load sharing. The control design is effectuated according to a hierarchical procedure. In order to verify the quality of the proposed control strategy, a time domain simulation of the whole system is performed. In the last part of the paper a numerical application is presented, highlighting the advantages that can be obtained by implementing the various strategies.
