The use of fine nickel as an alloying element to powder metal steels to increase their strength and hardenability is discussed. Admixed Ni powder maintains Fe powder compressibility, while the degree of hardenability is related to the amount of Ni that diffuses during sintering. Some metal powder (PM) parts manufacturers rely on high temperature sintering to put more Ni powder into solution with Fe. Furthermore, the improved dispersion of Ni has also affected distribution of other alloying elements such as Cu, which in turn affects other properties including dimensional controls.
