Many modern buses equipped with Euro III horizontal engines have experienced an increase in emission levels, especially particulates, when operating for relatively short periods of time on S free fuel. Inspection of the injectors from such vehicles showed a significant level of depositing which would impair their operation. This effect was reproduced in a bench engine test and studies conducted to investigate the underlying effects and potential solutions. These studies showed that the fuel quality was influential and the contamination of fuel with lubricating oil was also a contributing factor. Modern heavy duty diesel engines operating on sulphur free diesel fuel are prone to injector fouling when the fuel is not treated with detergent additive. The level of deposits is influenced by the presence of lubricating oil in the fuel, coming from the injection pump. The formation of deposits could be controlled through the use of an effective detergent additive and dirty injectors could be cleaned using a higher treat rate of detergent. It is recommended that all diesel grades, including 'truck' diesel, are treated with detergent to ensure full compliance with future emissions legislation.
