This paper describes a new intelligent control and diagnostic system for KT4 type trams in Tallinn. System operation modes and diagnostic methods were studied during hard- and software development of trams. To provide safe operation of equipment, the most important functions are rapid pinpointing of faults and evaluation of defective systems, devices and components. Control and diagnostics system of a tram handles the complete tram set. The system includes functions like diagnostics for preventive maintenance and service, recording of events and alarms, human-machine communication (e.g. passenger information system, tram driver information system etc.). Also, the developed control and diagnostics system implements functions like improved diagnostics (allows the integration of different intelligent fault diagnosis methods applicable to linear and special types of nonlinear processes), condition monitoring and comprehensive passenger information. All of this together boosts the efficiency of train or tram transportation systems and improves the quality of travel for the passengers. The new system gives the following advantages: many functions can be integrated into the multiprocessor system for optimum cost effectiveness; modular design allows flexible addition of components with a minimum of expenses for extra hard- or software; redundancy can be incorporated simply and inexpensively, high reliability, the use of data buses replaces a vast amount of traditional wiring, saving cost, space and weight. The structure and knowledge of the developed system can be used for different public and non-public transport vehicles, like busses, trolleys, passenger, freight and mass trams. The developed system has been awarded two patents, two utility models and one industrial design registered in the Estonian Patent Office.
