Grupo Condumex commissioned its R & D center (CIDEC) to conduct a series of studies to better understand the abrasive phenomena and to improve the abrasive resistance of new primary cable designs. The experimental design for this study included previous experience of CIDEC specialists in developing primary cable insulated with XLPE compounds. The results suggest use of an intermediate density polyethylene, or low density polyethylene, for improving the abrasive resistance of the cables. This type of polyethylene, when mixed with ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA), showed improvement in the abrasive resistance.
