In order to realize fuel system parts that conform to LEV-IT and P-ZEV exhaust emission regulations, the authors examined application to the fuel inlet pipe made of ferritic stainless steel. In the case of the ferritic stainless steel SUS436L with cationic electrodeposition coating, rust is not observed in general parts, and slight rust is observed only around the breather pipe ring-projection weld. The corrosion depth is about 250 mym, which is sufficiently small in comparison with material thickness. This means that it is suitable for use as fuel system parts material. The authors developed an automotive fuel inlet pipe to meet these regulations for vehicle emission: Low Emission Vehicle II (LEV- II) and Partial-Credit Zero Emission Vehicle (P-ZEV), by using ferritic stainless steel SUS436L with cationic electrodeposition coating. It has high corrosion resistance, no stress corrosion cracking susceptibility and high durability, which correspond to 15 years and 150000 miles guaranteed in a fuel system environment. This fuel inlet pipe made of ferritic stainless steel has been applied to mass production cars.
