The author considers Digital Engineering to be a technology that allows both visualization of hidden problems too difficult to discover in a conventional process, and simplification and increased efficiency to establish a lean and concurrent development process. This activity's objective is to reduce problems that occur later by front-loading problem solving during the design phase, to improve development quality, and to reduce development time and cost. The essence of the Toyota Production System is to realize lean production process by embedding quality in the process based on Toyota DNA. The core of Digital Engineering of Toyota, or 'V-Comm' utilizes IT to reform vehicle development process by using the foundation of TPS, which is a concept that promotes building in quality in the manufacturing process. This paper explains how Digital Engineering activity that focused on a heuristic vehicle assembly problem (which is highly dependent on prototype examination) changed the development process of a vehicle, and how Digital Engineering activities will evolve in the future.
