In this paper, the authors describe a driver's awareness evaluation based on a driver's status for driver assistance systems. The authors focus on the development of driver awareness and attention level monitoring, and describe the development of a prototype rear-view mirror that does not distract the driver's attention and the relationship between the driver's awareness level and eye blinking, by using a driving simulation test and actual driving conditions on a regular road. A prototype rear-view mirror with an image sensor for detecting the driver's face that does not disturb or distract the driver's attention is developed. Further, the driver's blinking feature using images acquired under various environments is obtained. Furthermore, the relationship between the driver's awareness level and eye blinking by using a driving simulation test and actual driving conditions with a task on a regular road is confirmed.
