Non-metallic materials are attractive due to their high specific strength. Non-destructive inspection (NDI) is an important task in aerospace applications of these materials in order to identify faulty components before catastrophic failure may occur. Unfortunately, the established NDI methods (e.g. ultrasonics, x-rays, and eddy-currents) are less applicable when e.g. thermal damage, false fibre orientation, impact, and delamination need to be identified. Of particular interest are those new NDI-methods which are robust enough to be applicable not only in the laboratory but also under industrial conditions and within a short time. The paper highlights modern NDT-methods, e.g. ultrasound thermography, non-linear scanning-vibrometry, ultrasound activated speckle and lock-in speckle interferometry displacement imaging. Some of these methods allow for imaging e.g. of impact or delaminations in a way where the confusing background of intact structures is suppressed ('defect-selective imaging') because local e.g. disbond may result either in mechanical losses (where heat is generated) or in clapping (where overtones are generated due to mechanical rectification). It will be discussed which information these methods provide, also their specific advantages and limitations. The examples relate to aerospace applications of glass fibre (GFRP) or carbon fibre reinforced polymer materials (CFRP) and ceramics.
