Like in land-based distributed power supply and in the mobile application for driving busses and cars, fuel cells have become established in the operation of vessels. On submarines, PEMFC operated with hydrogen/oxygen are ready for production. At the same time, studies and first demonstrations proved the reasonable use of fuel cells on board commercial and military surface vessels. In order to demonstrate the fuel cell technology on board ships, HFCS will launch a containerised 160 kWel fuel cell plant soon to operate it in various maritime projects. This will prove the benefit of fuel cells. Furthermore, it will help to gain experience in different fields of application needed to develop a fuel cell plant that could meet the requirements of a series production plant. The use of pure hydrogen as energy carrier is only conceivable in particular cases because of the low volumetric energy density of hydrogen and the high power demand on board ships. The diesel reformer represents one key component for the wide-spread application of fuel cell technology on board ships.
