Traffic monitoring derived from space born sensors has been recently investigated as an alternative or supplement of ground based traffic monitoring techniques. Nevertheless, most of the obtained results are still inadequate for poorly understood reasons. Therefore the authors propose a simulation system to analyse all relevant processes of traffic data extraction based on space borne sensors. This simulation system is a flexible and highly modular software package consisting of models describing the traffic scene at the ground, the sensor signal transfer through the atmosphere, sensor carrier influences, the sensor transfer function and the final signal processing steps. This system enables the evaluation of current sensors for traffic elated tasks as well as the more precise specification and optimization of future sensor and satellite parameters for traffic data collection.
