This paper deals with the design of iDrive user interface whose goal was to control a vechile's climate/comfort, entertainment, and navigation via a single-input device that roughly equivalent to a computer mouse. The iDrive system on the 7 series features a display screen, quite large by auto dash-board standards, and a knob or dial located on the center console. The second generation 5 and 6 series iDrive have four microcontrollers (MCUs) located in the head unit: a main processor for navigation and MMI (multimedia interface); a companion chip for graphics; and MCU and digital signal processor (DSP) for sound management; and an interface controller that functions as a gateway and provides security.
