In this paper the fuel consumption of a mid class vehicle equipped with both Traditional CVT and original Power Split CVT system are compared. An original Power Split CVT system was described with two phases able to guarantee a power flow without recirculation. The two phases have been described, each of which has a ratio range smaller than that of the CVT. In the first phase the transmission is joined so that it produces a PS-CVT with parallel connection. With the aid of clutches, in the second phase the PS-CVT is joined by a second shaft producing a connection in series. The proposed solution allows us always to have an input power in the CVT less than that of the output power of the PS-CVT. Through opportune planning it is possible to obtain a high ratio between the output power of the PS-CVT system and that in the CVT for high or low values of the global transmission ratio. The obtained results show that through the PS-CVT system proposed in this paper, it is possible to notably improve the efficiency compared to what would be obtained with the use of the simple CVT. The fuel consumption in a stationary condition i.e. at a constant vehicles speed have been calculated. The optimisation of fuel consumption has been achieved by means of the optimal choice of speed ratio in every operative condition. This choice minimises the fuel consumption and was calculated by a simulation model. For a vehicle speed greater than 30 km/h, the PS-CVT automatic transmissions perform better than traditional CVT. With the PS-CVT, the average value of the increment of the distance per litre in the range (50, 130) km/h can also exceed 9 %. From results it can be concluded that the original PS-CVT can be considered a convenient alternative to CVT transmission in mid class vehicles considering the fuel consumption.
