Torotrak's full toroidal IVT technology is gaining momentum towards first market launch. The first production applications will be in the agriculture and off-highway industries with a planned introduction commencing in 2005. The recent developments to significantly improve power density have enabled the technology to match the currently available 6ATs in power, package size, weight and cost. Fuel economy improvements of 20 % (against 4AT) without loss of performance have been proven through OEM testing. Driveability has been extensively assessed and endorsed by senior industry executives and has also been objectively validated by OEM vehicle engineers. The development of TORC(tm) has opened up the development of a new range of customer features which have added to the strong market appeal of full toroidal IVT. These features, which have a wide application can be amply demonstrated in a premium SUV application where the benefits extend to a complete deletion of the dual range transfer-case gear sets leading to seamless on to off-road vehicle transition. The IVT has been developed for long-term automotive application and is now showing strong potential in the field of hybrids. The fuel economy benefits derived from the operating principles of IVT are fully complementary to those from a mild parallel hybrid. This combination of technologies is indicating fuel economy gains on a par with much more complex and expensive systems making a mild hybrid IVT a pragmatic and cost effective choice.
