If the combustion engine could be further developed with the same success as achieved in the past years and thereby the CO2 emission could be reduced in the same manner, the self-set aim of the European automobile manufacturers for 2008 could be achieved in die Federal Republic of Germany. An extrapolation shows that, if die CO2 emissions decrease continuously linear by further engine developments, the 90 g/km could be attained only by the year 2025. During the next 20 years and beyond improvements within the combustion engines will contribute essentially to the clean and economic power supply of the conventional drivetrains. This is supported by the introduction of clean fossil fuels, whose full potential will be exploited by novel combustion processes like stratified combustion modes in gasoline engines. However, the energy supply of the board net will come more and more into the focus. In long-term conventional alternators with a maximum power of around 2.5 kW will not be able to stabilize the electric energy supply of future vehicle. Energy management systems will help to reduce the arising energy gap, but will not lead to a general solution. Therefore, efficient starter generators will play a stronger role within the energy supply in future vehicles and pave the way for a sustainable and assured energy supply. A low-noise, fast cold cranking and warm start of the combustion engine is possible. In addition, the ISG offers further functions like boosting, support of the combustion engine during acceleration and regenerative braking, reuse of kinetic vehicle energy, which is available for the next acceleration. With these functions, already more than 22 % fuel savings in the 10/15 cycle and 17 % in the NEDG cycle have been validated. Regarding drivability it is particularly pleasant, that despite the use of a small combustion engine in connection with a starter generator, the customer will save fuel and will keep his driving fun. Investigations showed that by the torque addition a 1.6 l combustion engine and a starter generator of 50 KW peak (120 V) provides approximately the same torque as a 3,0 l engine. By a skillful gear selection, the engine speed is often in a range of 1000 to 2500 U/ min. In this area, the combination of high ISG torque and high gear selection shows his benefit concerning drivability and elasticity, as consumption and noise are reduced and the acceleration of the vehicle is improved. Starter generators can only display this performance, if an appropriate energy storage like the double layer capacitor is used. Only in this case the starter generator can guarantee the overall power supply and provide sufficient power and energy for the board net and drivetrain. This trend - assured power supply and hybridisation of the powertrain - cannot be stopped. The starter generator is going to attack the conventional powertrains
