The use of electromagnetic devices in automobiles is increasing. Over the last 50 years the power loads in vehicles have risen from a few hundred watts to more than two kilowatts in many cases. The reasons for this stem from the increasing demands for improved vehicle performance, comfort, safety, functionality, emission control and fuel economy. Today's automobile contains around 50 electrical motors but in high-end vehicles the number could be well over 100. This paper gives an overview of electromagnetic technologies and devices in today's vehicles as well as the trend towards new technologies, such as the advent of X-by-wire and 42 Volt. A description of the opportunities and challenges provided by Soft Magnetic Composites (SMC) for existing and future automobiles will be presented. Finally, some examples of commercial SMC solutions will be presented.
