Structural topology optimisation is truly an interesting and important area, which has seen very rapid development and has matured considerably in many fields. There are a large number of disciplines in structural optimisation, such as MDO (Multidisciplinary optimisation), topology optimisation, and form-optimisation, but this survey focuses on some industrial applications rather than on any specific field. This paper presents a survey of the literature on the use of structural topology optimisation in the vehicle industry. The survey starts with a general historic resume and continues with a more detailed description of the status today. New application and areas for optimisation are presented, with short summaries of the referred papers. Since the theories of optimisation have matured, the trend for the future in the vehicle industry is clear; the goal is to find the structural topology design that maximises the energy absorption during vehicle collision. The author sees the development of methods to include optimisation as a tool during the design process as the most important step towards having structure optimisation implemented in the vehicle industry. The general trend, on the other hand, is to find new, interesting applications in new fields for optimisation. There is no doubt that optimisation must be used to stay competitive in the markets of the future.
