A new combined optical and laser scanning system developed by Norwegian company Norsk Elektro Optikk (NEO), that offers many advantages when compared with alternative methods of non-destructive testing, is described. The company designed a complex laser and computer combination, Optopig, intended to take high-resolution pictures of the inner walls of a pipeline in three dimensions. The Optopig inspection tool is based on custom, high-speed cameras, storage media, lasers, batteries and complex, custom electronics. The system makes inspection both fast and cheap, and does not require a coupling fluid between the sensor head and the pipe wall.
