New aluminum interior floor panels were developed to reduce interior noise in Shinkansen (bullet train) cars and were adopted in the new Kyushu Shinkansen 800 series trains. Floor-related sound reduction was increased markedly over conventional floors by using a double wall structure consisting of an upper plate and a dimpled lower plate. This structure decreased the sound radiation ratio of the upper plate. Moreover, the rigidity and strength of the floor was maintained, without affecting sound reduction performance, as the many dimples on the lower plate support the upper plate.
