Most, if not all, buried pipelines that have been in service for five or more years experience numerous corrosion and metallurgical defects, in particular cracks. There is always the chance that a pipeline could leak or rupture and a pipeline failure can cause serious human, environmental and financial losses. Cathodic protection, alone or in conjunction with organic protective coating, is generally recognised as the most effective and technically appropriate corrosion prevention methodology for oil and natural gas pipelines. However, this practice raises many questions, which in itself indicates that it is necessary to reassess this method of preventing corrosion in pipelines. In this paper, the role of cathodic protection in pipeline safety and reliability is briefly and critically assessed. As practice of cathodic protection results in hydrogen charging of steels, close attention is paid to the role of hydrogen embrittlement (or hydrogen-induced cracking) in environmentally assisted crack propagation in pipelines.
