Today's automobiles offer a combination of advanced technology and aesthetics, functionality, efficiency and environmental responsibility. Archieving this level of excellence requires special chemistry, including additives for paint performance, pigment blacks, matting agents for soft-feel coatings, and even windscreen coatings that repel water to make driving in the wet much safer. One of the big problems with pigment black particles is that the colour does not depend on the particle colour, but on the particle shape and aggregate structure. The smaller the primary particles the more pronounced the blue hue that makes black coatings so appealing The development of a new manufacturing process allows for the control of the aggregate structure through an aerosol process. This steers the agglomeration process of primary particles as they are sprayed into the flame. Two coating innovations have been developed to improve safety. The first is a coating for glass that improves visibility by creating a strongly oleophobic and hydrophobic surface. The two-component alcohol-based product, SivoClear is a fluoro-alkylsilane with a chemically bifunctional molecular structure. The second road safety innovation changes the way road marking paints are applied. The use of new cold-spray materials has improved the retroreflection properties.
