Mechatronic systems are created by a perfectly harmonised synthesis of mechanics, electronics and information processing. The synergy from the integration of these technical disciplines makes mechatronic systems far superior in terms of performance than conventional, autonomous systems. In the driver's cab of a modern forklift truck a joystick is integrated into the seat armrest for controlling the hydraulic system. The process chain following the joystick consists of electronic control unit and electromagnetic actuated proportional valves by means of which the hydraulic oil flow produced by the hydraulic pump can be distributed to the hydraulic actuators in controlled form. Depending on the particular forklift truck equipment, the lifting and load handling system incorporates between three and five hydraulic axes (lifting/lowering, tilting for ward/back, lateral movement as well as two additional functions, depending on the lifting equipment provided). The joystick - as an interface between human and machine - is frequently used where several control functions are to be influenced by the machine operator simultaneously or directly in succession. It is not only suitable for controlling diverse functions, but also facilitates vehicle operation and enables a higher degree of utilisation, at the same serving the driver as a labour-saving device. This paper gives an example of a joystick developed for use in forklift trucks. Following a general description of a joystick, the solution found for the forklift truck and further processing and utilisation of the information given with the joystick will be explained.
