The current and future status of lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries for unmanned underwater vehicles (UUV) is discussed. The current Li-ion systems contain twice as much lithium as can be safely used. The historical approach to developing Li-ion batteries for UUV has been to design a customized package on a specific power and energy budget. The Li-ion batteries will provide UUV manufacturers with a tremendous opportunity to extend vehicle mission times, increase payloads, dive deeper and move more quickly than ever before.
