Aerospace technology has provided an improvement to one of the most underrated elements of generator performance i.e. the hydrogen seal. The new technology addresses generator operators' desires to reduce oil ingress into the generator, eliminate potential seal rub damage, improve seal life and maintain high levels of hydrogen purity. As a third-level factor of safety, the new seal has the potential to maintain gas pressure during loss of seal oil system. Seal life is estimated to be more than 10 years. The Performance Plus seal technology is targeted to replace conventional hydrogen-cooled generator turbine and collector end business seals.
