The requirements of motor applications in vehicle traction are very different from those in most industrial systems. The operating points in the traction motor fluctuate across the torque-speed region over time. A long extended speed range is needed to support the vehicle's high speed. Other considerations are power and torque density, ruggedness and reliability. Among various candidates, the switched reluctance motor (SRM) drive satisfies more of the above requirements than any other well-known motor drives. In traction motor design, the first considerations are to meet the vehicle performance requirements such as acceleration, gradeability at given speed, maximum speed on a flat road etc. Along with these requirements, the drivetrain, especially the electric energy storage or electric power source, should be compact and lightweight. In this paper, first the required operating characteristics of the traction motor according to the vehicle dynamics are analysed. Then the traction characteristics of the SRM drive is evaluated along with some technologies useful for the improvement of the torque density, extending the constant power region etc. This paper also introduces sensorless control technologies, which are crucial for some vehicles, such as motor in hub vehicles and military vehicles that need continuous operation upon sensor failure.
