The use of simulation technologies has become increasingly important for the rail vehicle development process. The paper describes three key components of a recently developed virtual product development (VPD) system, which supports the development of innovative rail vehicle systems. Aerodynamics has a major impact on the cross wind sensitivity of a car. Using flexible car body structures embedded in the vehicle dynamics model, the ride comfort can be predicted. Finally, the structure gauge assessment can be supported by the use of an active digital mock-up.
