An international consortium of 35 steel producers arranged the project Ultra Light Steel Car Body (ULSAB) in 1994. Within 4 years a demonstration car body was manufactured, which showed the potential of lightweight construction with steel. Such material and production technologies have only been used, which were established technologies for high volume production at the beginning of the project. The advantages at the end of the project by equal costs, compared to standard manufacturing, are a weight reduction of 25 %, an improvement of the tensional stiffness of 80 %, an advance of the bending strength of 50 %, a high crash safety and high production stability. These excellent results arise from the constant advancements in the steel sector, e.g. in the last 40 years the yield strength of car body was more than doubled. In the meantime the yield strength of steel reaches 1000 MPa. This is a challenge for the production engineering. Drawing, forming and cutting tools must be more rigid and/or be coated and finally new, innovative forming processes, e.g. laser assisted bending or roll forming must be developed, because the high strength is mostly accompanied by a reduction of the forming capability. This paper deals with the laser assisted bending and roll forming of high strength martensitic-phase and complex phase steels. For laser assisted bending the system technology and the extension of the forming limits by the laser assistance are represented. Further for laser assisted roll forming the system technology and results are described.
