The increasing demand for electric power has resulted in a shift from 14V to 42V system voltage in automotive applications. Due to the complexity of automotive systems this transition goes through an intermediate step of having a dual 42 V and 14 V powernet. This provides an opportunity for a high volume application of power electronics. However, the requirements on power electronics in automotive applications are very harsh. The automotive market is highly cost-driven which sets boundaries on technologies that can be used for power converters implementation. On the other side, the operating environment sets rigorous temperature and size restrictions. The present practice of power electronic converters construction is not suitable for satisfying these rather opposite requirements and new concepts must be sought after. These concepts have been chosen for their suitability for large volume production but they have a common limitation namely that the power level is limited. Therefore a number of them have to be connected in parallel in order to achieve the desired power rating. Virtual designs are presented and evaluated.
