At the beginning of the 21st century, the Diesel engine has become a major actor for reducing both CO2 and pollutant emissions as well as fulfilling the customer requirements for driving pleasure, comfort, fuel economy and reliability. Nevertheless, the increasing demand for cleaner and cleaner powertrains is undoubtedly leading to a noticeable cost increase, mainly due to very sophisticated after treatment systems. In this context, alternative combustion modes as solutions to reduce engine-out emissions are widely investigated by a large number of car manufacturers, in parallel to the development of exhaust gas aftertreatment systems, which in any case will induce high associated production and development costs. The work summarized in this paper aims at applying such an alternative combustion mode generally called HCCI (Homogeneous Combustion Compression Ignition). Only three solutions allow to reduce both soot and NO(x) levels : - a low temperature with a locally lean Air/Fuel ratio; - a rich mixture associated to very high temperatures (with hot residuals); - a low temperature with a locally rich Air/Fuel ratio. The second solution seems to be hardly expensive due to the necessary material properties at high temperature and the third one would lead to huge amounts of HC and CO; therefore, the low temperature strategy remains as the more realistic way. This study shows the potential of the HCCI combustion process towards the reduction of engine-out soot and NO(x) emissions while maintaining the noise at an acceptable level for the customer. With an appropriate design and optimization of the combustion bowl, it has been possible to achieve simultaneously high performance levels (in the range of 60 kW/l to 65 kW/l specific power) and very low engine-out NO(x) emissions. However a new trade-off has yet to be found between engine-out NO(x) and HC emission levels as well as the impact of the HCCI combustion process on fuel consumption will also have to be put under control during the further development.
