CAE techniques are essential to support the design process for automotive body design. The central component for the design function is an integrated FEM process. This process has to take into account all the functional requirements for the real body design. The objective of this paper is to show new approaches in early concept design phases and show some of the latest trends in FE methods ranging from a more standard experience based to a more knowledge based design process. In this process in an early phase of body in white development, topology optimisation is used for the determination of an optimal lightweight structure that meets global stiffness and crash requirements. To get a BIW design proposal with topology optimisation, first the load cases that drive the design must be identified. Then design space is defined from the baseline geometry as envelope of body structure excluding package and passenger compartment. Using voxel technology a homogeneous hexahedron mesh for topology optimisation is generated automatically within the closed design space volume. Load cases are applied within the topology optimisation simulation. They are balanced the by application of appropriate weighting factors. The smoothed shell surface, derived from the resulting spatial frame structure is divided in modules and taken as reference, geometry for CAD realisation. The CAD realisation itself was made with the aid of a 'master solution data base' called the 'library'. The library concept based on a connection framework, which shows designers how to find an interpretation of the results. The final realisation of the still individual interpretation of the topology optimisation results was judged by an objective value, the performance index (PI). The illustrated process is a promising global target driven approach, for new design that can affects every single part of the body structure.
