Vehicle vibro-acoustic prediction analysis is usually performed using FE models in which the model properties are assumed known with certainty. However, owing to variation in the actual physical components of the real structure, many model parameters are random and not deterministic variables. There is currently considerable interest in methods of analysis that provide information about the scatter in responses. This paper discusses some of the methods available in a commercially available vibro-acoustic analysis program. A review of the theoretical basis of these methods is followed by some applications to real vehicle problems. In the paper theoretical methods for prediction of response variability are discussed. Probabilistic methods are presented: - the first order sensitivity model, - the stochastic finite element method, - Monte Carlo method, - the first order reliability method. Possibilistic methods include interval analysis, convex modelling and fuzzy modelling in which the concepts of possible bounds is extended to include levels of uncertainty. Optimization and robust analysis features of CDH/VAO are outlined. The application to a real vehicle design problem which occurred during the development of the new Astra platform at Adam Opel AG is described. A resonance condition in the interior sound pressure level at the driver's ear occurred at wide-open-throttle (WOT) driving condition. To understand the influence of the parameters - and to find a structural modification of the system that solves the problem for all vehicles - an analytical study was carried out using the CDH/VAO software. CDH/VAO proved to be a useful tool for the frequency response analysis and optimization of structural systems containing parameter uncertainty.
