The Diesel fuel injection equipment will remain a key element for Diesel engine technology evolution. Achieving emission targets at competitive prices has been and will continue to be a major technical challenge to the engine manufacturer. Using the long experience and expertise in the Diesel fuel injection equipment business, Delphi introduced in 2000 the MultecTM 1400 DCR (Diesel Common Rail). Based on this series production expertise, the second step of the evolution, MultecTM 1600 DCR was introduced in 2003. Key features are 1600 bar rail pressure, improved injection rate efficiency, increased durability despite the increased pressure, and when needed outstanding multiple injection capability. Delphi's vision for advanced diesel common rail technology includes the introduction of MultecTM 1800 DCR to be followed by the Direct Acting System, which uses a unique and revolutionary concept, where the nozzle needle is directly controlled by a piezo actuator. The Delphi MultecTM DCR has been designed to exceed the requirements of a variety of engine applications and shows good potential to meet Euro V. This paper describes the MultecTM . Further, a novel common rail injector will be presented, that uses a revolutionary, direct acting operating principle, where the nozzle is directly operated by a piezo actuator, without the use of a servo-hydraulic flow circuit. The superior performance of this injector concept is shown, especially in minimum quantity capability as well as multiple injection performance. The direct acting operating principle allows rapid opening and closing of the injector, without compromising pilot quantity capability. The emission benefit obtained by such opening and closing behavior will be shown.
