Heinrich Hertz, as soon as the end of the XIXth century, studied the concept of electric power transmission in free space without any material guide. After a short historical reminder on development of Wireless Power Transmission techniques (WPT), this communication describes the present characteristics and the prospects of microwaves and lasers techniques. Today, the global efficiency of microwaves transmission goes beyond 50% as the efficiency of the transmission per laser beam still remains at a few percent. The prospects of applications of the WPT techniques are various and range from specific terrestrial short links of low power to applications concerning multi-gigawatts links with distances of several thousands of kilometres. A step-by-step approach is recommended.
