Fundamental studies were carried out to measure the influence of Thixomolding process parameters on a variety of physical and mechanical properties for injection molded magnesium alloys. Ultrasonic techniques were used to investigate the fatigue properties of Thixomolded AZ91D alloy. Strain gages determined the maximum strain amplitude, and the corresponding stress amplitudes ranged from 70 to 95 MPa (10 to 14 ksi). Trials were conducted on the Noranda AJ52 magnesium alloy. When produced with a low volume fraction of primary solids, the Thixomolded AJ52 material exceeded the room temperature properties of AZ91D, while providing creep resistance superior to aluminum alloy 380 at 150 degree C (300 degree F).
