The multilayered shear deformable shell model is developed for pneumatic radial tyres, based on Reddy's higher-order shear deformation theory and the total energy functional is then established to impose the first-order variation for a direct semi-analytical solution to mechanical performance of the shell tyres in various loading conditions. In the present research, the Rayleigh-Ritz technique is used to construct the approximate solution, in which geometry and trial functions are represented by Bezier polynomial on divided segments of the reference surface of the tyre. This piece-wise direct approach appears to be accurate in mechanics modelling with a few finite segments and convenient in geometrical treatment for the tyre. As a result, the efficiency of the present method makes it possible to accommodate an optimal design procedure for the contour surface of the tyre. Numerical example is made for the specific radial tyre and computational results obtained by the current solution procedure are presented for internal forces and displacements of the first tyre belt. It has been demonstrated from a comparison of the present predictions for the tyre stresses and deformations with the 3-D FEA computations that a fairly good agreement is achieved. The present research, therefore, opens a new way to the optimisation of the tyre design which alleviates problems of large computational effort in preparation of mess FEM results. The present method can also be applied to analyse unsymmetrical stress characterisation of the multilayered tyre under one side terrestrial force and as well as eigen modes and wave propagation characteristics of the tyre for further study.
