The Wärtsila 64 with its 2 MW power per cylinder and 640 mm bore is the world's largest medium speed engine ever built. The 6 to 18 cylinder configuration covers power output from 12060 up to 34920 kW. In this power range 200 to 280 ships are delivered yearly. The 50 % efficiency and 0,5 g/kWh oil consumption of the Wärtsilä 64 seem to be attracting a lot of interest. From the emission point of view the Wärtsilä 64 meets the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) curve and, with Direct Water Injection the engine can make half of the IMO value. The medium speed engine has two advantages: the controllable pitch propeller (CPP) and the auxiliary propulsion drive (APD) system. The high bore to stroke ratio means that for a given piston speed (based on optimum mechanical efficiency and minimum wear values on the engine), sufficiently long combustion times are achieved. First costs and fuel oil costs are equal but Wärtsilä 64 gives lower emissions, lower height and weight, optimum propeller rpm, lower cost for lube oil and maintenance work. The aim of tooling design for all the main maintenance activities to be done within 3 hours was achieved by multi-stage tools with components weighing less than 25 kg. Thirteen engines are running and the total availability is 99,6%.
