As engines and their associated equipment become more and more complex so the need to make sense of the data being generated by their monitoring systems becomes more important. Systems with expert diagnostics capability are in use for standard engine applications. The MAN B&W Diesel CoCoS system is one such example. A locomotive is a very specific case. The operating environment is tough and the hardware and software have to be proven to comply with exacting standards. The Viking 22, and more recently, Viking 25 engine management systems have been specially customised and tested to the railway specifications. The need was to minimise cost and complexity but still provide maximum access from any location with a telephone. Both applications fulfilled their requirements and could be retrofitted to existing engines in service. They are just two ways that controlling cost and maximising availability can be addresses.
