It is assumed that the collision process evolves as follows: (1) an ordinary situation becomes a dangerous one in accordance with environmental and driver characteristics and (2) a collision occurs if the demands of the dangerous situation exceed the driver's ability to cope. A study was conducted to examine the characteristics of elder drivers in ordinary driving situations at an intersection with actual and simulated driving experiments. Elder drivers glanced at the road environment fewer times, and they glanced away from the point. Though the number of times the glance direction changed increased as a function of situational conditions (e.g., the number of visual targets in the situation), the number of glances was limited by the negotiating time and glance duration. Elder drivers tended to terminate visual acquisition earlier than younger drivers, which deteriorated the perception of potential dangerous events at intersections. Elder drivers also drove less smoothly than younger drivers. Furthermore, elder drivers tended to compensate less for deteriorated physiological functions. These characteristics of the elder drivers increase the risk of an ordinary driving situation becoming a dangerous one.
