In this paper, a new function, 'Equivalent Road Roughness (ERR)', was proposed as an enforced displacement on the contact area between a tire and a road surface, in order to be able to calculate interior road noise quantitatively and qualitatively. This function is easily identified by experiment and is applied to the contact area. So, it depends only on tire's stiffness and road roughness but not on suspension stiffness. Therefore it is very useful at a concept stage of vehicle development to study what type of suspension is better for interior road noise performance. First of all, the notion behind ERR was explained by a simplified model. Then, it was generalized into a complex system. Finally, interior road noise and body vibration were estimated by using the proposed function, and it was verified by comparing calculated data with experimental data.
