A high performance electric double layer capacitor was developed with an energy density of 6.3-6.8 W/h/kg and power density of 500 W/kg at 93-95% roundtrip efficiency, suitable for braking energy regeneration which is an important factor for hybrid buses and trucks. To fully demonstrate basic performance of the high performance capacitor, it was important to reduce the connection resistance, as well as to control cell voltage when the vehicle is stopped and also during driving. By combining a clean and highly efficient Miller cycle CNG engine with a high performance capacitor system, a hybrid bus was developed. Fuel economy was improved by 2.0 times that of a conventional diesel engine bus, and vehicle efficiency reached 48% on the M15 mode test. A simple diesel hybrid truck has been developed, consisting of a parallel hybrid drive system that is a combination of a high performance capacitor and single motor that highly benefits from regenerated brake energy. A fuel economy of 1.5 times the same sized diesel truck at a M I5 mode has been achieved and improved exhaust gas levels to 25% of the new short term regulation requirements. Low pollutant levels has been achieved that do not depend on infrastructure, and a low fuel consumption, long-life rechargeable battery equipped hybrid truck. This truck was put on the market in June, 2002.
