The piston ring is a key component in a marine combustion engine. High mechanical loads, relatively high temperatures and corrosive gases and liquids influence its performance in terms of sealing capacity, wear of cylinder liner and the ring itself. When designing a piston ring a co-operation between different areas of expertise is needed to ensure the optimal ring performance during operation of the engine. Base material of the ring, coating technology and ring geometry (OPCORE R design) are some examples of such expertise discussed in the article. Cast iron has proven its suitability as the piston ring material for marine diesel engines due to its relatively high mechanical strength, satisfactory tribological properties and thermal conductivity. A compacted graphite iron grade Darcast R has been developed by Daros Piston Rings AB over the recent years to be used mainly as top ring material. Second generation of ceramic hard-chromium galvanic coating, Z-chrome, is currently being developed by Daros Piston Rings AB and is presented in this paper. The thermal stability of the coating is superior to the first generation of the coating produced under the trademark Tritor R. The coating will allow higher temperatures of the top rings in the engine minimizing the risk of scuffing and probably leading to increased TBO. A number of tribological aspects is also discussed here. The wear phenomenon is discussed for different types of ring base materials and coatings used in large two-stroke marine diesel engines.
